In January, ARTEMIS was delighted to offer a pair of Monotype workshops with artist and print-maker Susan Gransby.  The sessions were held on two consecutive Wednesday evenings  – Jan. 18th and 25th, from 7pm to 10pm, and cost $120.00 for both classes, materials included.

No previous printmaking or painting experience was necessary for this very flexible, forgiving process.

SUSAN GRANSBY

Susan Gransby was born in London, England. She obtained her B.A. from UBC and an Honours Diploma in Printmaking from the Vancouver School of Art. She spent many years at Malaspina Printmakers and now works out of her Burnaby home studio. Her etchings, linocuts, monotypes and mixed media works have been exhibited across Canada and the U.S. and in Japan, Spain, Finland and Peru and are in several Canadian public galleries, including the Vancouver Art Gallery, as well as numerous private and corporate collections. The former journalist also writes, edits and curates. Curator/art historian Roger Boulet once described her work as “a refreshingly uncomplicated vision with a relaxed and easy intimacy”.

AN INTRODUCTION TO WATER-BASED MONOTYPE

In this water-based monotype workshop students learned to create one-of-a-kind “painterly prints” using non-toxic materials such as watercolour paints, pencils, crayons and pastels. The classes were suitable for both complete beginners and more experienced painters and printmakers wishing to experiment with a new technique. Printing by hand from a plexiglas plate, Susan taught a technique  that yields either simple, immediate results or complex images built up over time. This process can easily be worked on at home and printed by hand or on a press. All materials were provided – supplemented by the students’ own from a list given out at registration.
